Introduction and Rondo

Introduction and Rondo was commissioned by Patma Family Music Concerts, and written for an audience of toddlers. Scored for double woodwind, two French horns, timpani and strings, the work had its first performance in Melbourne, Australia on April 3, 2011. It was subsequently performed by the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia on November 12, 2012.

The extract below is the second appearance of the rondo theme, along with the second episode. The theme begins with a strong statement from the horns, and confident, sweeping lines in the strings. But the end of the theme sees a rampant sequence take the music into a strange new world, with an ominous ostinato in the cellos and basses and diminished melodies in the bassoons and oboes.
