Black Rapids

Black Rapids is a string quartet commissioned by the Silo Collective. It was premiered by the Enigma Quartet on 27 November 2014, as part of Musica Viva's Huntington Estate Music Festival.

The work is a struggle between fast and slow. Over fifteen minutes, the furious motion of semiquavers spreads from the lowest register of the cello to the highest register of the violins. But these musical rapids are periodically challenged by a slow, yearning motet. It gradually takes hold of the work, forcing the stream of semiquavers into weaker and weaker positions. Ultimately, the motet’s mission becomes a search for closure.
